~ Planet of The Apes ~

The original Planet of the Apes movie was a movie that launched four sequels, a live action tv series, and even an animated show. The movie begins with four astronaughts traveling in space. They crash land on a planet many centuries in the future and are unsure of their exact location. Taylor as played by Charlton Heston leads the group onto this strange world. He has only two fellow astronaughts as one female died during their travels.

Taylor notices how similar this planet is to Earth. It supports life and appears a bountiful garden full of life. But will any of this life be intelligent. Taylor and his crew discover primitive humans eating from the trees while acting more like beast than man. If this is the best this world has then it appears these three astronaughts will be running all afairs here shortly.

Horses are heard and Taylor looks up and sees a Gorilla on a horse. It apperars that this Planet is ruled by Apes. The story progresses slowly but surely. Nonhuman primates run everything here. Gorillias, Chimpanzees, and Orangautauns can speak and even walk upright. Human beings on this planet are treated like cattle and are not much more brutish than cattle. Gorilla soldiers use humans for target practice and round up those they don't shoot to be put in huts like prisons. Human Beings are a thing for the zoo on this world. Taylor is seen as a threat by the council of Ape City. Lawgiver Zaius, an Orangautan knows full well the history of man's former dominance but defends and furthters the lie that Apes have always been dominant over man.

All of Taylor's companions are lost except his new found primitive female mate Nova; only with the help of chimpanzee doctors is Taylor able to escape the wrath of this world. As the movie ends Taylor learns something startingly. In the horizon by the shoreline he sees the head of the statue of liberty. It becomes apparent that his travels in space led him back to Earth in fact and this planet was his home. He knows in his heart that nuclear war ruined his world and allowed this Apes to take control.

~ Beneath the Planet of the Apes ~

The second movie Beneath the Planet of the Apes takes place directly after the first. It begins with a new human astronaught arriving on the Ape planet in much the same fashion as Taylor (Charlton Heston) did before. This newcomer to the planet is named Brent. He finds Nova the female mate of Taylor and seeks to find out just what has happened to Taylor. Ultimately Brent and Nova stubmble upon vast underground passageways. This is the dwelling of mutant humans who worship an atomic bomb and have incredible power over other human minds. These mutants refuse to fight or kill even in defense. But they do not hestitate to use their powers to force others to do this for them. Taylor is captured at this underground complex and forced to fight Brent. The mutant that forces them to fight is ultimately killed by a spike in the jail door. The Ape army is marching to this place beneath the city to destroy it. An atom bomb is being prepared for a most dramatic display or worship. As the missile slowly rises in the air the Apes try to pull it down with ropes at first but without much luck. Taylor attempts to stop the misile from firing and destroyong the world but an Ape shoots him and he dies then so does the world.

~ Escape from the Planet of the Apes ~

The third Planet of the Apes film amazingly takes place after the Earth was destroyed by a nuclear missile in the second movie. This movie begins with three ape-o-nauts traveling back in time and arriving in the United States in the later part of the 20th century. This seemed to be the only story premise that would save the valuable Planet of the Apes franchise since the Earth was actually destroyed in Beneath the Planet o the Apes. Corneilus and Zira as well as a third chimpanzee are the three ape astronauts. They are at first treated like royalty by popular culture and society. They can talk and walk and it is a cool novelty for people at first. As they tell the story of their origin it soon becomes apparent to the United States government that their existance would pose a continual threat to humanity. When Zira the female chimp is discovered to be pregnant the President of the United States orders an immediate abortion as well as sterlization for Zira. This order was to combat the possibilty that Apes may rule man in the future. If these apes would just live and die off quietly the problem would seem to be solved. Cornelius and Zira resist however and ultimately are killed. They do have an offspring and this offspring is kept in secret by a human named Armando. This ape child is to become Ceasar the leader of the Great Ape revolution in the coming future.

~ Conquest of the Planet of the Apes ~

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes takes place before the first Planet of the Apes movie. This movie gives details of how the great Ape revolution against man began. A great plague killed off all the cats and dogs that man so loved to enjoy and cherish for compaionship. Man would not give up his pets however; when dogs and cats all died a new pet was merely substitued. Society began to see primates such as Chimpanzees appear on the scene as a new source of companionship. Primates have vastly greater intellect than dogs or cats and they proved to be useful in many other ways as well. Man began to not just domesticate smaller primates like chimpanzees but moved into domesticating even gorillas which were stronger and well suited for menial slave labor. In the beginning Apes were well conditioned and a vast Ape control domestication center kept things in order. When apes would cause trouble they were dealt with swiftly and the situation was quickly resolved.

As time went on Ceasar the child of the speaking chimpanzees Cornelius and Zira begins to speak and learn the higher abilities of thought. He uses his intellect and rallies his oppressed Ape comrades against man. He basically occupies Ape Control and sets the basic organizationl element in place that would guide a unified Ape society in the future. Ceasar awaits man's innevitable downfall and plots and schemes until the day a true Planet of the Apes can be born.

Chimpanzee revolution leader Ceasar, Gorilla Aldo, Governor Breck in charge of Ape Management, Chimpanzee Lisa, Human circus trainer Armando, and Human McDonald.

~ Battle for the Planet of the Apes ~

Battle for the Planet of the Apes was the fifth and very last Planet of the Apes film made. This film had a definitive kiddie based appeal. The movie takes place in the future in a world where Apes and Men try to get along under the leadership of the Chimpanzee Ceasar. A rival group of humans also exists hiding in this world with modern weapons and know how. A clash between this group and the Apes with
"domesticated" humans is innevitable. Gorillas attempt a military coup to take command but ultimately it fails. A Gorilla general kills Ceasar's son because he overheard some of the general's plans for the coup. The movie ends with Ceasar fighting this Ape. An Ape has killed an ape, which had never happened before. Apes were then proven to be capable of man's petty greeds, ambitions and jealousies that the first movie claimed were exclusively a thing of man.

~ Battle for the Planet of the Apes - Movie Characters ~ 1973
Chimpanzee leader Ceasar, Gorilla General Aldo, Orangautan Story teller the Lawgiver, Wise Orangautaun Virgil, Mutant Humans, and Human McDonald a friend of Ceasar's.

~ TV Series ~ 1974

The Planet of the Apes movie saga ventured into a live action series which premiered in 1974 on CBS. The show takes place after the events of the first movie. The premise of the show is that two astonauts from Earth's past, Virdon and Burke arrive in Earth's future which is dominated by Apes. They befriend a chimpanzee named Galen and together the three of them exist as fugitives from ape authorites.

Each episode began with music building slowly in the background which climaxes with a loud trumpet call.
Then the camera slowly zooms in on a hunter raising his rifle overhead in triumph. The hunter is a Gorilla soldier and his salute to victory represents man's downfall from dominance.

The show was scheduled to run 24 episodes but only 14 were completed.
Staring - Roddy McDowall as Chimpanzee Galen, Ron Harper as astronaut Virdon, James Naughton as Astronaut Burke, Mark Leonard as Gorilla Urko,
Booth Colman as Orangutan Dr. Zaius.

~ Return to the Planet of the Apes ~
Cartoon TV Series - 1975

The animated series was the last work relating to the Apes saga produced. It was produced after the live action TV series and aired in 1975 as a Saturday morning cartoon for 13 episodes. The storyline was continuous and built on previous episodes.

The show is set in the year 3979 after the first and second Apes movies.Familiar characters from the first and second Apes movie including female Nova, Cornelius, Zira and Dr Zaius inhabit this world as does General Urko from the live action Apes TV series.

The cartoon takes a different approach to the Apes concept as in this show, Apes have automobiles, TV, and even make use of a repaired fighter airplane. Human astronauts from the past crash and lead human survivors to safety after extermination is deemed their future by Ape Council.

Frequent references to American culture abound throughout the shows brief run. The Apefather is a favorite movie and humans underground wait for "USA" the one who will lead them to salvation.
